"When I think of a performance of Wicked’s “Popular,” the last word that comes to mind is “butch.” And yet, last Saturday night, I watched a pink-haired butch in orange work pants (their ring of keys on the left, thank you very much) and a white ribbed tank prance around a stage in a packed venue in Bushwick, nearly growling the words to the song that was also printed on their chest: “POPULAR.”"
